After the lion, I was making some concepts of creatures more lightly based on the original sprites. One of those was the giant. I've tried to capture the original's feel still with the colors as you can see, but had a bit more artistic freedom with the pose. I wanted to make the guy look like a hulking, savage creature.

I think the colours are a bit vivid!
ReplyDeleteHere's a look I like that fits in with the simplified forms:

The original Chaos was using strong, vivid colors on dark background, that's the reason of using vivid colors on the creatures. We'd like the game to be immediately recognizable as a sequel of Chaos, but updated with cool effects, 3D graphics, and smooth animation. Think of the creatures as things made of pure energy, vivid colors help that effect too. Cool looking picture by the way.
DeleteGood stuff, I like the vivid primary spectrum approach. Can we see an animated gooey blob next?
DeleteI think you will have to wait a bit more for that, but at least as far as I know there will be a gooey blob in Chaos Reborn. I loved that spell too, so I'm happy that it will be included.
DeleteYes I like it! Gonna be good.
ReplyDeletelooking good, I like it
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I wasn't too keen on the lion but I really think the giant captures the original whilst modernising it in a really cool way. Great image!
ReplyDeleteAre you definitely going for one main colour based on the original? I only ask because the Chaos remake currently available on Android really subtly added a few dabs of colour to the original characters and I think that it was a wonderful improvement. Ironically, the giant was the one character that I think was overly reengineered in that release!
Great to hear you like it! Keeping the spirit of the original, while modernising is exactly the way we'd like to go. One main color is the initial idea, but I was also thinking of adding subtle hue changes where necessary, what you see in my posts is visualising the thinking process.
DeletePerhaps a splash of colour could be an item of clothing or equipment? It could bear the same colour as the controlling wizard to identify the creature's owner?
DeleteI guess you will get a lot of comments on the graphics:)
ReplyDeleteI loved the lion (mapping it back to the original sprite is great), but the original giant looked "tall", and this one looks "squat" (more how I'd imagine the ogre to look), which is kindof a shame.
That's just a niggle though, I love the bright colours, and the direction the new graphics are taking.
Actually it does look like the Orge with the club (Or it could also be the fabled Troll. Could the new Chaos also include a Scarecrow? hmmmm).
Deletecode::Biscuit: I knew I will get a lot of comments, and I'm fine with it, and I'm used to it. I will also try to answer as much as my time permits to the things that I can answer to.
DeleteRatfaceFlanagan: There will be new creatures at least, which were not in the original Chaos as far as I know.
Scarecrow could actually be a really twisted new creature idea, I kinda like that!!
DeleteSingle colour theme is the way to go! :) This is my game of the year already.
ReplyDeleteI agree with people saying this has the potential to be confused with the Ogre, though. The Giant always seemed more about height to me, with the Ogre being the bulkier build but smaller.
ReplyDeleteLooks like he's going to lose those old child-bearing hips though! ;) (only joking, the old sprite is great too!)
Actually I'm divided... I wrote under the post for version 2 that I would prefer if the club was swinging in front of the giant, but I think version 1 is growing on me. The more I look at it, the more I like it.
DeleteYeah... it's the trickiest one so far. I think the club is essential, maybe try doing a pic of the other style with the Club. I still think this one would make a great Ogre,
DeleteI'm the same person as Mullins btw, keeps logging me in as different accounts. I'll stick to one in future.
