A development blog for my new game 'Chaos Reborn', a sequel to my 1985 ZX Spectrum classic 'Chaos' - plus some musing on games and the games industry in general.

Giant v2
As there was some fair points in comments about the previous giant concept, I've decided to give it another go. Here's the result.
I love the fact that you're willing to listen to suggestions. As for the giant, I think having him with a rock in his hands may suggest a ranged attack, which he doesn't have. I would maybe prefer him with a club, like in version 1, but with the club swinging in front of his body rather than over his head. This way the giant could be maximum height from head to toe, which I think it's important for the creature.
Keep up the good work, I am loving the look of the two creatures so far.
Yes, a rock could suggest ranged combat - unless it was so heavy even the giant couldn't throw it more than 1 hex. But perhaps a giant club would be more appropriate for him.
I'm liking the 'glowing monochrome' look very much, it's a great way to retain the original aesthetic.
I was wondering though, what are your thoughts about scale? In the original Chaos, everything was rather abstract, so wizards, lions, ogres, giants and dragons all looked roughly the same size. I've been assuming that freed from their 16x16 pixel sprite prisons, the monsters would all be a bit more realistically sized, with giants towering over orcs and so on, but I guess you're still limited to every monster having to fit on a single hexagon?
Yes, there will be variations in the size of creatures, but you are right that they have to fit into a standard hex size. There will still be some abstraction, so that the variation in sizes is not extreme.
I remember the giant being lawful alignment (I could be wrong). But he's looking a bit brutish here, more chaotic. Although, you're always going to look a little uncouth if you wield a giant club(or rock).
This made me think he had a range attack also (I guessed that was the reason for changing to this version from the old). The older club version had a pretty stylin' pose.

I meant "three creatures so far", not two. I always have trouble with the number that comes after one.

DeleteAn uprooted tree surely. :-) With the roots still attached as "spikes" on his club.
DeleteGood idea!

ReplyDeleteHmm, you have a point. A "lawful" creature should perhaps look a little more civilized than this.
DeleteWhat about something looking like this or this?
<3!
