A development blog for my new game 'Chaos Reborn', a sequel to my 1985 ZX Spectrum classic 'Chaos' - plus some musing on games and the games industry in general.

3D Spider with color variations
Some color variations on the spider, these are also already from the engine in Unity. What colour should the spider be?
I think the green spider comes closest to my mental approximation of a fantasy spider, but all three look great, perhaps the game could have a built in colour/shader editor to customize creatures so players could easily differentiate between their creatures and other players creatures, or something subtle to highlight who controls what.
I'm a traditionalist - Yellow for me too... Well... unless you're going to give them different types of poison, in which case why not all 3? (maybe I'm not that much of a traditionalist)
The spider in Chaos was white, but that wasn't a GIANT spider ;). Personally I'd prefer a darker colour, as that is always creepier for spiders, although it might be too different from the rest of the palette.
Just came on here to add somewhere that this game has me more excited than any other coming out for PC this year! All power to you and the team, Julian, for daring to resurrect the best 8-bit game ever made.
This is great to see, me and a couple of friends still play choas on the old speccy to this day as a bit of a tradition still good fun to play, (altho i'll confess its on an emulator, nobody likes re-loading the game if you die early! haha) its got to be my favourite game of all time, put it this way i can't invision myself playing anything else for example 25 years from now!. so it certainly gets a 10/10 for lastabilty, thankfully i stumbled upon it as a freebie on a magazine.
I've seen a few remakes not make it threw the development stages and those that have finished have never surpassed the original in my opinon (still nice to see tho), i only found out by chance that this was being made by Julian Gollop. i hope it gets finished since its looking pretty awesome, but for my favourite game to be remade by the original developer 25 years in the future is somewhat of a pleasent suprise to say the least. I never thought i would see it happen, and i'm delighted.
The art work as well is very impressive i like the simplisty of it that the fact its just one coloured sprites, which is keeping with the tradition of the original (amongst other things) anyhow i'm just a fan and thought i would drop in a comment, thankyou for 'Choas battle of the wizards' its bought many years of entertainment, and i will be keeping a keen eye on this project. good times!
and lastly i hope Turmoil is just a rare magic wood spell like in the original, since it being common in previous remakes i felt it unbalanced the game too much, being rare it was just a nice feature. well thats just my opinon you made the game so i have faith!
P.S are you happy to listen to spell suggestions? or is the game planned out already in your vision. all the best
Dudes. Make the spider the same colour as the Wizard. That was the only thing that annoyed me about the original. You could only tell whos creature was whos from selecting it...

ReplyDeleteThe Giant Spider in Lords of Chaos was yellow, so that gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteHaha, my thoughts exactly :).
DeleteSounds like a good enough reason to me.
DeleteClickerty-clackerty!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the blue looks like a frost spider from Ultima Online.
ReplyDeleteYellow, or green eventually, seems a more natural choice of color.
I like the orange one at the bottom. It looks creepier than the others. In fact, I'm typing this from behind the sofa.
ReplyDeleteYellow get's my vote.
ReplyDeleteAgree with yellow.

ReplyDeleteWasn't the spider in Chaos white? Or is my memory failing me?

ReplyDeleteIt probably also depends on the background colour of the terrain. Are you still going for mostly green backgrounds?
ReplyDeleteI think you should make it orange.

I check this site everyday for updates, but haven't seen any for almost a month now.
ReplyDeleteAre the updates happening somewhere else now or are you guys just really busy making a masterpiece?
PS: You are a the cats' pajamas Julian, i have loved your games for so many years.

ReplyDeleteGo #TeamChaos!
Glen you are a sensible fellow.
DeleteEither that or maybe a couple shades lighter/darker.
